The regular meeting #222 of Yamanote Toastmasters Club (TMC) was held on Feb 3rd at Nakameguro Square. I’ve been in the club for a half year and it was my first time tobe a Toastmaster of the evening (TMOE). After starting the preparation for the meeting,I realized that I’ve attended our previous meetings without concentrating since I oftencome to the same question “how should I prepare for this?” But there was no problem. Each member willingly helped me and responded to my questions promptly, so I finishedpreparing for the meeting quite smoothly. Meeting #222 was a bit different from a usualmeeting. We invited a special guest speaker, who is a champion of the toastmaster’sspeech competition in Japan. During the preparation, I discussed the speech with the guest via emails. He was a nice person and I pretty much enjoyed this opportunity. On the day, while I was waiting for the meeting to begin, I realized that there weremany guests who looked like native English speakers. Since I feel uncomfortable withmy English, I felt a bit nervous. But the first half of the meeting was the Japanese session, so I turned my attention to the Japanese session and I tried to think that I shouldenjoy the Japanese session at least. The first prepared speech which I was personallylooking forward to was very fun and everybody laughed. The evaluation session cameimmediately after the first speech. Since we had a guest speaker, I was sorry that I could not give the evaluator enough time to prepare for the evaluation, but the evaluatorwillingly took the role and gave some great advice to the speaker. Then I introducedthe guest speaker. The speech title was “how to make an impactful speech”. The speaker said that “a speaker should not speak to entire audiences unilaterally but talkto individuals as a speaker normally talked to his/her friends.” To demonstrate this idea, the guest speaker chose two demo-speakers from the club members. They each had aninstant short speech, and the guest speaker gave them several suggestions to improvetheir speeches. Such exchange between the guest and the demo-speakers made us laugh, and the special speech session became a very successful one. We learned alot from the speech of the guest speaker and I’m sure we can improve our speeches. I appreciate all who related to the guest speech. After intermission, I started the English session on time.
As usual, we had 2 speeches,2 evaluations, and a table topic session. 2 female speakers prepared very organized speeches and their speeches created a good atmosphere during the meeting. As evaluators, 2 veteran members pointed out the good parts of the speakers, and gave thespeakers some tips to improve their speeches. During the table topic session, a tabletopic master gave us interesting questions related to “a living place”, and the questionsstimulated our interests. The members who were assigned as table topic speakers gaveus short instant speeches that were very fun. The next part was a general evaluation session. The general evaluator who was also one of the demo speakers in the guest speech reviewed the meeting entirely. Lastly, I announced each award, and after thepictorials, I returned my role as the MC to the president. From the preparation to TMOE, I realized that I pretty much enjoyed the role. I’ve gotLove and Motivation from Yamanote TMC once again^^. Thanks to all the participants! By M
